Hey Beer lovers, the International Beer Day was celebrated on August 4th and especially for this day we have prepared an article about the biggest International Beer Festival in Asia! Where and When? Keep reading 😉
The port city Qingdao (青岛, Qīngdǎo) – one of the five main foreign trade ports of China, located in the southeast part of Shandong Province on the coast of the Yellow Sea. It is a very beautiful seaside city with clean air, nice beaches, amazing mountain landscape and rich history.
Qingdao city and its surrounding areas have a lot of interesting and beautiful places to visit. In addition to the famous tourist sites, such as Lesser Qingdao, Small Fish Hill, Lu Xun Park, Qingdao Aquarium, Qingdao Marine Product Museum, Qingdao Navy Museum, Zhanshan Temple, Catholic churches, Christian churches, Governor’s Residence, and many others, visitors can also make a tour to Laoshan and Fushan mountains with a marvellous natural scenery.
Qingdao has a reputation of the most European city in China as a result of the influence of German culture in the end of 19th – beginning of 20th century. From 1897 until the First World War, Qingdao (or Tsingtao, as it was called back then) as the colonial part of the country was under the German authority. Before being called back to Germany, military forces not only changed the architecture style of the city but also the life style, by building German breweries and developing the city. Today, the Tsingtao Brewery produces the most popular beer not only in China – Tsingtao beer is also well known in Asia and all over the world. Walking through the city, you can still see a great deal of European architecture: the old buildings with red roofs (most notably in the old town area), narrow streets, surrounded by parks, Catholic churches, green alleys, small cosy cafes – those are only the main things strike the eye at first.
While most of the people associate China with Baijiu, it becomes one of the biggest beer consumers, most of which – Qingdao Beer (青岛啤酒). The geographical position and historical aspects made Qingdao the brewing (and of course, the beer) capital of China. Every Summer this city hosts an impressive International Beer Festival, which over the years became the Asia’s largest annual beer festival and often referred to as the ‘Asian Oktoberfest’.
And you can really see the German influence during this festival: in the way how the wooden benches and tables are set inside of the beer tents, German cousin and beer choice offered to the guests, traditional Bavarian brass bands entertaining the crowd and of course, how the beer is served – in masses (1L beer glass), just like on the Octoberfest.
The first festival took place in 1991 and since then it is usually held every summer, starting on the second weekend of August with the grand opening ceremony and lasting for 16 days. The motto of the Festival – GanBei with the World! (青岛和世界干杯) and this is a truly international event which every year attracts more than 30 domestic and overseas brewers from China, Japan, Korea, Germany, Ireland, USA, Russia, etc., and presents over 400 different kinds and sorts of beer and tourists from all over the world.
For more than 2 weeks the whole city turns in to one big festival – everywhere people are drinking beer, advertisements and announcements of the celebrations shining on the streets, carnivals and fireworks happening in different parts of the city – the holiday atmosphere reigns everywhere! But despite the fact, that there are a lot of people drinking a lot of beer, you can barely see any serious fights during this event. Most of the people consider this festival as a chance to become a part of western culture and show that Chinese can also enjoy the time!
